## Facts

### What Is Form 1118 Used For?

Form 1118 is used for claiming foreign tax credit for taxes paid or accrued abroad on income that is also taxed in the United States. It is filed solely by C corporations, rather than individuals, estates, or trusts, which are required to use Form 1116.

### Who Should Use Form 1118?

U.S. corporations that wish to claim a foreign tax credit should use Form 1118 to calculate the credit for income taxes paid or accrued to foreign countries or U.S. possessions. Most often, this form is used by U.S. corporations with international branches, foreign subsidiaries, GILTI inclusions, and passive foreign income, such as royalties from foreign sources.

### When Is Form 1118 Due?

Form 1118 due date is the same as for Form 1120. This is generally the 15th day of the fourth month after the end of the corporation's tax year, which is April 15 for calendar-year filers. The deadline also includes any Form 1120 extensions. Keep in mind that while filing an extension provides your corporation with more time to file the return, it doesn’t extend the deadline for paying taxes.

### What Happens If Form 1118 Is Not Submitted?

If you don’t submit Form 1118 to the IRS, your corporation may be subject to paying more in U.S. taxes than necessary if it earns foreign-source income or carries out foreign operations. This is because this form allows you to credit the corporate income taxed abroad against your corporation’s U.S. liability, which typically prevents double taxation.

### How and Where Do I File Form 1118?

You should file Form 1118 together with your income tax return. In other words, you should attach it to Form 1120 before submitting it to the IRS. You can fill out Form 1118 quickly using our PDF editor and download it to your device.
