### What Is Form 2290?

Form 2290 is a document used to calculate and pay taxes on heavy highway vehicles whose weight is 55,000 pounds or more. Furthermore, it allows you to claim suspension from tax if you expect to use a vehicle less than 5,000 miles and claim credit for tax paid on stolen or destroyed vehicles.

### Who Is Required to Fill Out Form 2290?

Everyone registered as an owner of heavy taxable vehicles is required to fill out Form 2290. That can be an individual, a business, a self-employed person, or an organization.

### When Is Form 2290 Due for Submission?

Form 2290 is due for submission on 31st August for all vehicles that were used in July, because the heavy highway vehicle tax period runs from 1st July to 30th June.



New vehicles bought after July require a tax return as well, but it should be submitted by the last day of the month following the month of their first use. So, if you begin using a vehicle in September, the tax return should be filed by 31st October.

### What Are the Penalties for Not Submitting the 2290 Form?

The penalties for not submitting the 2290 Form on time may include monthly interest rates charged on the tax owed or significant fines and imprisonment if the IRS deems it tax evasion. Furthermore, vehicles without the HVUT Form 2290 may have their registrations suspended.

### Where Do I File the 2290 Form?

You should file the 2290 Form with the IRS, either by mail or electronically. If you’re filing for more than 25 vehicles, you must submit your tax returns electronically, but not directly on the IRS website. Instead, use one of the participating commercial software providers to complete the filing.
