## Facts

### What Is a T4 Slip Used For?

A T4 slip is a Canadian form used as a summary of an employee’s remuneration for a calendar year, containing information about their salary, benefits, and tax deductions. Employees use this document to correctly file their personal income tax return.

### Who Should Use a T4 Slip?

A T4 slip is filled out by employers for their employees, but it is primarily used by employees for tax purposes.

### When Is the T4 Slip Due?

Employers must furnish their employees with T4 slips by February 28 to give them enough time to fill out and file their tax returns, which are due by the end of April. If this date falls on a weekend, the deadline is pushed to the next business day.

### What Happens If a T4 Slip Is Not Submitted?

If a T4 slip is not submitted to employees and the CRA by the deadline, penalties may apply. Their amounts depend on how late the filing is and if they are filed at all. Failure to file comes with a $25 penalty per slip each day the deadline is missed, up to a maximum of $2,500.

Furthermore, the number of late slips can affect the penalty, which may range between $1,000 and $7,500.

### How and Where Do I File a T4 Slip?

You should file one part of a T4 slip with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), while the other should be furnished to your employees. When filing with the CRA, you can use their online portal or submit the slips in paper form if there are 50 or fewer.
