Read our detailed guide to learn how to compress a PDF on iPhone with the Files app or an online tool, so you can shrink and send large files.

In order to compress a PDF on an iPhone, you can

zip the file in the Files app or run it through an online compressor in Safari

. The online route is the one that actually shrinks the images inside your PDF.

Compression matters because email services often reject large attachments, and scanned documents balloon fast. This guide walks you through both above-mentioned methods, shows how much size you can realistically save, and covers email tips and fixes for stubborn files!

The Files app wraps a PDF in a ZIP archive, so it bundles files but rarely helps you reduce PDF size on iPhone by much.

An online compressor trims the image data inside the file, which is where most of the weight sits.

Your savings depend on page count, image resolution, and whether the PDF is a scan.

Check your email provider's attachment limit first, then compress a PDF for email on iPhone before you attach it.

If the file stays large, split it into parts or send a link instead of an attachment.

Let’s have a look at the six factors that set the ceiling.

For example, a 20-page scan saved at high resolution can pass 25 MB, while the same pages at a lower resolution often fit under that limit. A text-only contract starts small and changes little, but if you still want to know how to reduce PDF size on iPhone without hurting quality,

How to Compress PDF on iPhone: 2 Great Methods That Work

If your PDF won't compress, it's usually because the file is already optimized, image-heavy, or protected. Here's how to find the cause and fix it.

If your PDF won't compress, the file usually already has little redundant data left to remove. This often happens because it contains already-compressed images, scanned pages, encrypted content, or embedded fonts and attachments. Compression tools strip out duplicate or unnecessary data, and once that data is gone, there isn't much room left to shrink the file further.

This is a common problem with PDFs built from scanned documents, design software, or photography, where images make up most of the file. If you know why compression stalls, it can save you from repeating a failed attempt and help you pick the right fix instead.

In this guide, we'll walk through the most common reasons a PDF won't compress, how to fix each one, and how to reduce the size of a PDF file without losing quality.

A PDF often won't compress because it's already optimized, made up of scanned images, or contains encrypted or embedded data that basic tools can't easily shrink.

Text-heavy PDFs compress well on their own, but image-heavy or scanned PDFs usually need image-specific fixes.

If your file is still large after compression, check for high-resolution images, embedded fonts, or a compression setting that's too conservative.

You can usually compress a PDF without losing quality by choosing a moderate level instead of the lightest or strongest setting.

Before compressing, confirm the file finished uploading completely, and try a second file to rule out a tool-specific issue.

9 Reasons Why Your PDF Won't Compress (+ Fixes)

Several factors can prevent a PDF from shrinking, from what's already inside the file to how the compression tool handles it. If you're asking yourself, “Why can't I compress my PDF even after trying more than once?”, one of the nine reasons below is likely the cause.

Here's a quick overview before we go through each one in detail.

Some PDFs are already about as small as they can get. If the file was created by design software, exported from a website, or previously run through a compressor, most of the redundant data

. Therefore, you won't be able to shrink it much further by running it through another tool, no matter how many times you try.

Check the file's history before assuming the tool failed. Compare its size to similar documents, or ask whoever sent it whether it's already been compressed. If it has, further shrinking isn't realistic without removing actual content.

Text-based PDFs are usually small to begin with, since text data takes up far less space than images. If your document is a handful of pages made up mostly of words,

there may simply be very little left to compress

, even before you run the file through a tool at all.

Match your expectations to the file type. A five-page contract that's already under 200 KB doesn't need compressing. If you still want to trim it slightly, you can remove unused fonts or simplify the PDF's internal structure.

Photos and graphics pulled from a phone, camera, or stock library are frequently saved in already-compressed formats like

. When you insert pre-compressed images into a PDF, there isn't much extra data left for a compression tool to strip out, which is why the file barely shrinks.

and check their format and resolution before deciding whether swapping them out could help, or accept that the file is already close to its practical floor.

#4. The PDF Contains High-Resolution Images

Documents built from scans, design files, or photography often contain images sized for print rather than screen viewing. These high-resolution images make up the bulk of the file, and if a compression tool isn't set to reduce image quality, it will skip over them entirely.

Use a compressor that lets you adjust image quality, not just strip metadata. You can also

or its images down to screen resolution before compressing again for a noticeably smaller result.

a photograph of each page rather than searchable text

. Even a short scanned document can run several megabytes, because every page is stored as an image, and image data compresses far less efficiently than text does.

Run OCR if you need searchable text, and optimize the scanned images at the same time. OCR itself doesn't necessarily reduce file size, but optimizing the scan's image resolution and compression can significantly shrink the PDF

#6. The PDF Contains Embedded Files or Extra Data

carry more than what's visible on the page

, and hidden layers all add to the file size, and standard compression tools don't always touch this extra data.

This is because removing it can affect how the document renders on different devices, a concern the

is central to how complex the PDF format has become.

Check whether the PDF has attachments or embedded objects you can remove, and strip unnecessary metadata if your tool allows it. Only remove embedded fonts if you're confident the document will still display correctly without them.

may prevent optimization or modification, depending on their security settings and the tool you're using. This is why certain compressors fail or return the same file size.

Remove the password before compressing, then reapply protection afterward if you still need the file secured. Most online tools, including ours, let you

#8. You're Using the Wrong Compression Tool or Settings

Not every compression tool works the same way. Some only remove metadata, while others also recompress images and fonts. If your compression tool doesn't work the way you expect, it may simply be set to a "light" mode that leaves most of the file untouched on purpose to protect quality.

instead of relying on default settings. An editor that lets you choose between light, medium, and strong compression makes it easier to see the difference each setting makes.

#9. The Tool Doesn't Support Your File Type

Some compressors are built for standard PDFs and struggle with

, or documents exported from specialized software. If the tool can't fully parse the file, it may return an error or hand back the same file, unchanged.

If your tool can't process the file correctly, try a compressor that supports that PDF/A standard rather than converting it unnecessarily.

Why Is Your PDF Still Large After Compression?

after compression, a few things are usually going on:

The file was already close to its minimum size

The settings you chose were too conservative to make a real difference

The fastest way to reduce the size of a PDF file for good is to fix the root cause instead of just increasing the compression level again.

#1. You Started With an Already-Optimized File

If the PDF was created recently or exported directly from design software, it may already

reflect efficient compression settings from the start

In that case, running it through another compressor won't shrink the file much further, because there simply isn't much redundant data left to remove. Compare the "before" and "after" file sizes rather than judging by percentage alone; for example, a five percent reduction on an already-lean file is still a normal result.

#2. The File Has Multiple High-Resolution Images

Compression tools often process one image at a time. A document with dozens of high-resolution photos or scans can still be large after processing, since each image only shrinks so far before quality visibly drops. If your PDF is filled with product photos, screenshots, or scanned pages, the images are almost always why the file stays big.

. If you reduce dimensions to match how the PDF will actually be viewed (screen resolution instead of print resolution), it often cuts the file size more effectively than compression alone.

default to a conservative setting that prioritizes quality over size

, especially tools designed to avoid ruining images. If you picked a "light" or "minimal" setting, or didn't choose a level at all, the tool may have made only small changes on purpose.

To solve this, look for a medium or strong compression option and compare the results. Most PDFs handle a stronger setting without a visible quality drop, particularly if the document is meant for screen reading rather than print.

#4. The PDF Contains Embedded Fonts or Objects

Custom fonts, vector graphics, and embedded objects like spreadsheets or forms add to file size in ways that basic compression doesn't always address. Yet, removing them risks breaking the document's formatting. A file loaded with unique fonts or interactive elements can stay large no matter how aggressively you compress the images inside it.

Here, you can check whether every embedded font is necessary, and consider whether interactive elements like

need to stay in the final version. Then, you can remove what you don't need and shrink the file more reliably than compression settings alone.

Can You Compress a PDF Without Losing Quality?

you can compress a PDF without losing quality

by choosing moderate compression settings that remove redundant data instead of aggressively degrading images. The trade-off between size and quality depends on the compression method used and how far you push it.

Lossless optimization can make the PDF's existing data more efficient without reducing image quality. This shrinks files without touching image quality at all, though the size reduction is usually modest.

Meanwhile, lossy compression reduces image resolution or color depth to achieve a smaller file. According to

Wake Forest University's overview of image compression

, lossy methods can shrink files considerably while keeping visible quality loss minimal when applied moderately instead of at maximum strength.

For most everyday documents, a moderate setting keeps text sharp and images clear enough for screen or print use. If you specifically need to try

, you can start with a medium setting and only increase it if the file still isn't small enough.

Before compressing a PDF, you should work through this quick checklist first, as it can save you a repeat failed attempt:

Confirm the file finished uploading completely; an interrupted upload can cause a tool to fail or return the file unchanged.

Note the current file size so you have a baseline to compare against after compression.

Try a different file in the same tool; if that one compresses normally, the issue is specific to your original PDF, and it’s not about the tool.

Make sure the PDF isn't password-protected, since encryption can block compression until it's removed.

If you'll need to share the result afterward, confirm the reduced size fits within

or whatever platform you're uploading to.

Many platforms cap upload sizes well below what a scanned document produces. The IRS, for example, limits digital document uploads to

. Therefore, it helps if you know your target size in advance, since you can pick the right compression level instead of guessing.

Shrink any PDF right in your browser, with no software installs, printing, or re-scanning required.

Compress PDFs Without Losing Quality

A PDF that won't compress usually comes down to one of a few things; once you know which one applies, the fix is usually straightforward.

If you've tried the steps above and your PDF still won't compress enough, running it through a dedicated tool,

, with adjustable quality settings is often the fastest way to get a usable result without sacrificing readability.

. Files that are already optimized, made up mostly of text, or built from images that were compressed before being inserted often have little left to shrink, no matter how many times you run them through a compressor.

, while text-based documents that are already small

, since there's less redundant data to remove.

#3. Why does my PDF stay the same size after compression?

Your PDF stays the same size after compression

when the tool can't find redundant data to remove

. This often happens because the file is encrypted, already compressed, or made up of content types the tool doesn't fully support, like embedded fonts or attachments.

if you use a reputable tool that doesn't store your files longer than necessary. Look for editors that process files securely and delete them after a short period to help keep your documents private.

#5. Does compressing a PDF remove pages or content?

doesn't remove pages or text content by default

; it reduces file size by optimizing images, fonts, and metadata. If you want to shrink a file further by cutting pages, you'll need to

PDF Won’t Compress: Causes & How To Solve the Issue

The answer to “Why are my PDF files so large?” is that they are scanned or contain details like embedded fonts, multimedia, metadata, etc.

because they contain high-resolution images, embedded fonts, unnecessary metadata, and complex design elements or multimedia

. They can also be ‘inflated’ because they are scanned and saved as images rather than text-based files.

In this guide, we will cover the common reasons why PDFs inflate in size and provide practical tips to resize them so that editing, sharing, and organizing files become more manageable. You can also learn how to check your PDF size and how to prevent it from enlarging in the first place.

PDFs containing high-resolution images, such as catalogs and brochures, are larger in size because images bring more pixel data into the files.

Embedded fonts, multimedia, metadata, and complex design elements, such as gradients and shadows, can also inflate a PDF’s size.

You can check a file’s size on Windows by right-clicking the PDF in

On browsers, including Chrome, Mozilla, and Safari, click

in the top right corner of the PDF when you open it to check how large it is.

You can reduce a large PDF size by compressing it, removing unused objects and metadata, optimizing images and converting scans, and flattening the document before exporting it.

6 Common Reasons Why PDF Files Become Large

Higher-resolution images contain more pixels

Even if you shrink the image on the page, the PDF holds the full-resolution version in the background. Therefore, the more high-resolution images a PDF contains,

, so the document doesn't have to rely on system fonts and can still display text consistently across devices. They increase the file size because each font includes its own formatting data for every character, not just the ones used in the document. If your PDF has multiple fonts, its file size becomes even larger.

saved as images rather than text-based files

; each page is an image, with pixel data that takes up more space than text. As such, a single scanned page can make the PDF file too big.

Moreover, unlike text-based PDFs, such files don’t use efficient

, so they can’t reduce size in the same way. As more pages are added, the PDF grows quickly because each page contributes an image.

such as author details, document properties, comments, and hidden elements. This data does not appear in the main content but remains part of the file.

the PDF continues to store this extra information

even after edits or revisions. Over time, repeated changes can add layers of unused or outdated data. Some files may also include embedded thumbnails or attachments that are no longer needed.

Complex design elements include features such as layers, transparency effects,

, gradients, and shadows. These elements improve visual appearance, but the PDF must

 store detailed instructions for rendering

For example, layered designs keep multiple objects and their relationships, while effects like gradients require additional data to display correctly. Unlike text, these

increase the amount of data the file contains

and thereby inflate the size of the PDF.

Even short audio clips require significant storage, and attachments such as spreadsheets or documents also add their full file size to the PDF. As a result, a single embedded file can
